A clean bill of health. . .

Just got back from the vet, with one new lipoma (the size of a peach as per the vet) and a second lump on his muzzle that turned out to be an infection, likely from sticking his nose into places where small critters live.  Perhaps into small critters themselves.  I think you all know where my mind had been going – once a cancer dog mom, always a cancer dog mom.  So happy to walk out of the vet with my little bottle of antibiotics!

Otis, an 8 year old 106 lb. lab/Dane mix, became a Tripawd on February 9, 2016 after his right front leg broke due to osteosarcoma. We did 4 rounds of carboplatin, but lung mets were discovered on Agust 25, and he passed on September 4. Otis was half of a bonded pair, and his adopted sister Tess, passed suddenly of hemangiosarcoma on October 9. The day before Tess passed, a local lab rescue group had identfied Gator, a 120 pound 6 year old yellow in need of a home, as a potential companion for her. His picture was on my phone, and my house needed a dog. . .

  1. Christine,
We get it and totally understand. You would think after almost 5 years my mind wouldn’t go there but it does. Every lump or bump I swear I run through everything and off to the vet we go.

I am so glad Gator only had to have antibiotics. My vet told me some dogs just tend to be lumpy as they get older. But it never hurts to check it out.

  2. “once a cancer dog mom, always a cancer dog mom”… oh don’t we know it.

So glad to hear Gator is pretty healthy otherwise. No doubt because of the vigilance and advocacy you learned through Otis and Tess’ experience. Good job, maw.

  3. Oh gosh Christine!!! You must have been scared s**tless! It here is such a thing zs a “free pass” on this journey, goodness knows you deserve one!!

Soooooo ecstatic that everything is A-OK for that handsome boy! Ans he is sooooo handsome!!! I just love that face.

Was it ever determined if he had Great Dane in his family?? 🙂 🙂 🙂 Gator is a biiiig boy!!!

Always good to hear from you znd always good to see pictures of the Gator!

And yeah, no doubt his nose will have many more “critter bumps” in his future! 🙂

  4. Totally Christine, truest comment ever! Glad it was nothing serious. Nitro must’ve had over 20 lipomas, I gave up counting them after awhile. Gator’s looking great! Nice to hear from you.

  5. We’ve never chatted, but my name is Danielle. I lost my Yellow Lab after a year of surgery and chemo. It’s only been 6 months, and I’m not ready yet to go on an intended search for a new rescue…and I know it’s because I’m afraid I’ll be “a cancer mom”. I can’t bear the thought, and feel like I need to be ready to hear diagnoses again. I am SO GLAD that your visit to the vet was “normal”. I wish you calm and blessings to your beautiful dog.
