Mr. Gator’s Dog Toys

We talk a lot on this site about toys designed to keep your tripawds mentally engaged, and scent detection frequently comes up. Β So, even though Gator is a quad (a certified member of the Tripawds Nation Big Yellow Rescued Dog Club), he wanted to share his favorite toys. Β Note that all you need for most of these games is a critter (a small furry something that runs around).

Mouse in drain pipe – you will note that the drain pipe is no longer connected to the house. To the best of my knowledge, the mouse survived.

Critters under bush. This is a scent detection game – you have to check under every bush where critters might have been.

Critters under gazebo – you can tell from the trash that there really was a nest under there. I believe these critters also escaped.

A close up, so you can see the bite and claw marks. Believe it or not, my lawn service told me that there was ‘evidence of animals digging’ in my backyard.

More critters under bush – it is a quite time consuming game, as you must check under each bush multiple times.

Critters under the fence? Also must be checked carefully.

If you are stuck inside, a purple stuffed dinosaur will have to do the trick.

Wow. That was exhausting.

Otis, an 8 year old 106 lb. lab/Dane mix, became a Tripawd on February 9, 2016 after his right front leg broke due to osteosarcoma. We did 4 rounds of carboplatin, but lung mets were discovered on Agust 25, and he passed on September 4. Otis was half of a bonded pair, and his adopted sister Tess, passed suddenly of hemangiosarcoma on October 9. The day before Tess passed, a local lab rescue group had identfied Gator, a 120 pound 6 year old yellow in need of a home, as a potential companion for her. His picture was on my phone, and my house needed a dog. . .

  1. Now THAT was just hilarious! I loved your post it really made me laugh – Get ’em Gator! What a creative guy, clearly he creates his own fun. Those critters are wily and must be watched carefully lest they invade the yard! Luckily you are safe with Gator on patrol. I loved the lawn company’s notes.
Too darn cute – Amy & Rusty

Gator!! You crack me up! πŸ™‚ I think there are dogs in this world that know that they have one job and will do anything to work this job! For Manni it was always guarding his property (and the perimeter, and the car, and his friends, and…) and I know we don’t even have to talk about Gator’s job here πŸ™‚
I really do believe that to these dogs, only this one specific job will really keep them happy so I am sure that Gator is one happy camper. Or camp finder. Or critter camp finder.

  3. <3 <3 <3 it Gator. Sure looks like you have a good nose. Scent work is awesome. One of my friends does barn hunts with her dogs. *(They find rats planted ones of course) but I suppose they could find wild ones too yuck lol.

  5. Gator, Gator, Gator! It’s been far too long since we saw your handsome face.

It looks as if he has truly settled in and that he knows this is his forever home. He has appointed himself the Intruder Patrolman, and none of those furry rodent-like critters had better show their faces when he is on the job.

He needs to teach Ollie to go after rodents other than the furry tailed kind.

  6. Wow Gator takes his job seriously. The time and patience he takes to check EVERYWHERE is awe inspiring! Gator there are guard dogs and there are guard dogs, but you my friend are guard dog extrodinair! Nothing gets past you! Looks like you love your job too so heck you’ve got the best of both worlds! A job you love and you get paid in food and toys and hugs and kisses well you get my drift here. Carry on Gator carry on!
